Salt Dough Footprint Olaf Christmas Ornament

Olaf ornament

As Christmas approaches, it’s craft time at home! I love creating a new ornament each year, and this year’s idea, inspired by Pinterest, was simply too adorable to pass up.

Introducing the Salt Dough Footprint Olaf ornament!

To get started, here’s the recipe for the salt dough:

2 Cups Flour
1 Cup Salt
1 Cup Warm Water

Dough Kneaded

Knead the dough until it’s smooth and pliable; the longer you knead, the better the texture will be.

Preheat your oven to 200°F to dry the ornament. Alternatively, you can let it air dry. I baked mine for about 2 hours and then let it air dry for a few days, depending on the thickness.

Adding Blue Gel Coloring

Since the background will be blue, I added blue gel food coloring to the dough to eliminate the need for painting later.

However, once dry, the dough developed a whitish powder coating, so I ended up painting it blue anyway.

Roll out your dough to your desired thickness and press your child’s foot into it to create a footprint, making sure to push down on their toes for detail.

Now it’s time to wait for the dough to dry. Don’t forget to poke a hole at the top while it’s wet for hanging later.

Painting Olaf

Once dry, start by painting the blue background. After that dries, paint the white body of the snowman and add rosy cheeks to give him character.

Once the white paint dries, use the same blue to add his mouth.

Outline his mouth and draw his eyes, eyebrows, hair, arms, and buttons using a black Sharpie marker.

Finish with his nose, and voilà! You’ve created a fun, memorable keepsake ornament.

Finished Olaf Ornament

While I’ve seen these as tree ornaments, my kids have outgrown that option with their larger feet! Instead, I’m planning to hang them on the wall.

What is your favorite keepsake to create with your kids during Christmas?

Merry Christmas and happy crafting!
