Between January and July, Mexico welcomed 13.35 million international tourists by air. This figure is 9.6% higher than last year’s numbers and 13.3% higher than pre-pandemic figures, which saw 11.79 million tourists. According to the Mexican Ministry of Tourism, over six out of ten tourists came from the United States.
In the first seven months of 2022, the US, Canada, and Colombia welcomed 10.39 million tourists, a 10.5% increase from 2022 and 22.3% from 2019.
Mexico received 8.43 million American tourists by air, a 5.8% increase compared to the previous year and a 26.8% increase compared to 2019. This means that Americans comprise 63.1% of the total international tourists. Canada was the second largest contributor, with 1.54 million tourists, representing a 63.4% increase from the previous year. The Canadian market faced strong pandemic-related restrictions and had almost three winters without travel. However, compared to 2019, tourist arrivals by air increased by 1.6%. Colombian travelers contributed 415,478 arrivals by air, surpassing 327,201 arrivals in 2019. The top three countries contributed 78% of all air travel arrivals. Additionally, there were 2.96 million tourists from other nationalities, representing an increase of 6.3%.
The busiest airports in Mexico
Out of 3.35 million tourists who arrived in Mexico by air, 10.15 million (a 7.8% increase) came through the three major country’s airports of Cancún, Mexico City, and Los Cabos.
Between January and July, 6.18 million international tourists arrived at Cancún airport, an 8.2% increase from the previous year. Mexico City airport received 2.5 million tourists (a 5.2% increase), and Los Cabos airport received 1.46 million tourists (a 10.2% increase).
Other airports in Mexico received a total of 3.2 million international tourists, exceeding the numbers from 2022 by 15.7%.
