The sun is shining, and you’re hiking along the Portuguese coastal route, surrounded by stunning scenery – sounds perfect, right? Indeed, it is as long as you’re prepared for the warm temperatures. Hiking in hot weather can be enjoyable, but if you’re exposed to the sun for an extended period, being well-prepared is essential to avoid illness and ensure your trip isn’t spoiled.

To begin with, maintaining hydration is crucial while hiking in warm conditions – dehydration can be detrimental! Make sure to have ample sun protection and suitable footwear. Also, consider timing your hikes to avoid the hottest parts of the day.

Here are our three essential tips for hiking in hot weather.

Hydration

When spending time outdoors in the sun, staying hydrated is vital, especially in the heat, just like during a long hike. Dehydration can ruin your experience! Always have enough water available and take regular sips or breaks for hydration. Many seasoned hikers opt for a water backpack that can hold a couple of liters of water, making access easier.

Sun Protection

Hiking for 8 hours or more daily exposes you to the sun’s harmful rays for prolonged periods, which can seriously damage your skin, particularly if you don’t frequently reapply sunscreen. Before you head out, pack plenty of sunblock with an SPF of 30 or higher and reapply every 3 to 4 hours, adjusting for your activity level and the heat.

Other protective measures include wearing a hat, sunglasses, utilizing an umbrella, and donning lightweight, breathable clothing.

Footwear

The importance of appropriate footwear on long hikes cannot be overstated! We recommend considering two main components: shoes and socks.

Shoes

If you’re aware that hot weather is expected, opt for lightweight, breathable shoes instead of waterproof ones. The shoes should be durable and provide adequate support for your stride. If you acquire a new pair, make sure to break them in before hitting the trails to avoid blisters.

Socks

With so many sock options available, it’s beneficial to do your research before selecting a type. Ideally, your socks should be lightweight, moisture-wicking, and both durable and comfortable since you’ll be wearing them for extended periods. Similar to shoes, it’s advisable to wear in your socks before your hike to prevent blisters.
