The notion that video games dull the mind is simply untrue. Many video games can be highly educational and even stimulate cognitive growth. In this article, we explore how video games can enhance creativity.

Children Who Play Video Games Are More Creative

Research from Michigan State University indicates that 12-year-olds who engage in video gaming tend to excel in creative activities such as storytelling and drawing.

Interestingly, the study also examined the impact of other technologies like smartphones and the internet, which were found to have a lesser effect on creativity. This suggests that video games are superior in stimulating imaginative thinking compared to other digital mediums.

Some Games Foster Creativity More Than Others

Researchers Seyedahmad Rahimi and Valerie Shute argue that while video games can indeed encourage creativity, certain types are markedly more effective.

Games that present linear challenges with only one solution are great for enhancing problem-solving skills but do not significantly promote overarching creativity. Instead, games that allow for exploration and offer more freedom, like those that let players design levels or customize characters, are more effective.

A perfect example is Minecraft. This game has no definitive objective; while Minecraft survival servers can include leveling up, players are free to create their own adventures. The game’s most creative element is the ability to design and construct structures across a virtually limitless landscape, allowing players to recreate cities and build fantasy kingdoms.

Other notable games such as LittleBigPlanet, Roblox, The Sims, and Garry’s Mod also incorporate sandbox features, encouraging players to experiment and build. Sandbox elements are prevalent in many other titles, including Fallout: New Vegas, Portal 2, and Animal Crossing. However, not all of these games are appropriate for children, so consider this when selecting a game to boost a child’s creativity (Minecraft, Roblox, and LittleBigPlanet are all child-friendly).

Additionally, it’s important to ensure that children have a suitable gaming environment with the necessary equipment. Fast internet speeds enhance the gaming experience, so consider running an internet speed test to verify your connection. Good internet service minimizes frustrations during gaming.

Exploring Other Avenues to Enhance Creativity

Video games aren’t the only way to spark creativity. If you want to cultivate your own creativity or inspire a child without relying solely on video games, consider engaging in alternative creative activities such as:

  • Reading books
  • Drawing or painting
  • Building with Lego
  • Composing original songs
  • Writing short stories
  • Creating poetry
  • Making YouTube videos
  • Photography
  • Experimenting with makeup art
  • Clay modeling
  • Paper crafts
  • Playing board games like Scrabble and Pictionary
  • Choreographing your own dance routines
