Kids and the Dosing Dilemma | Over the Counter Meds

This post is sponsored by Children’s Mercy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Spring has arrived, bringing with it sniffles, runny noses, coughs, and the “dosing dilemma” associated with over-the-counter cold medications and antibiotics.

Have you ever thought about the importance of administering the correct dosage for any medication, particularly for children of all ages?

How much is appropriate?

Here are some helpful guidelines to consider:

  1. Consult your local pharmacist. Have the child’s age and weight on hand, as dosage can vary based on these factors. Be aware of any other medications your child may be taking.
  2. Read the package label. If you’re using a doctor-recommended over-the-counter medication, verify the dosage on the packaging. Ensure you have an accurate weight and age before administering.
  3. Avoid using common utensils like teaspoons for measuring. Instead, use a syringe, oral dropper, dosing spoon, or marked medication cup for precise dosage.
  4. Do not mix medications, including herbal remedies, unless directed by a physician. If your child exhibits multiple symptoms, look for a medication that can address all concerns. Mixing medications can lead to adverse reactions.

Did you know that two children of the same size and age can react very differently to the same prescribed dosage of medicine?

Children’s Mercy is dedicated to understanding how genetics, growth and development, diseases, and environmental factors influence a child’s response to medications. Their approach, likened to the “Goldilocks” method, aims to ensure that dosages are “just right.” All personnel are trained specifically to treat children, which encompasses knowledge of prescribing the correct amounts, frequency, and treatment plans. Whether addressing leukemia or the common cold, it is vital for both medical professionals and parents to prioritize effective dosing.

Currently, Children’s Mercy is developing a new platform called GOLDILOKs, which assists physicians in determining the optimal dosage for treating ailments like leukemia, ADHD, and more. This platform incorporates patients’ medical histories to deliver real-time results, allowing doctors to simulate dosages based on desired effects. This model is also being utilized in studying medications for cardiology, asthma, and others. More information about GOLDILOKs can be found here.

Whenever my niece and nephews are home sick, they typically stay with me because their parents are at work. I always double-check the dosages of any medications, even for OTC options, because they can contain potent ingredients.
